A study by the University of California, published in 2002, shows that a dark color display can consume less energy than a light color. A dark color display background will save up to 48% of energy for a CRT and up to 15% of energy for an LCD.

Specifically, if one considers the more than 200 million requests per day on Google, and if we assume that each visit lasts 10 seconds, this means that Google "works" about 550,000 hours every day on PCs. According to these figures, the use of a black background instead of a white background represents a saving of 8.3 MWh (megawatt hours) each day, or about 3,000 MWh per year, enough energy to power 1000 Small wind turbines.
